A leak announces itself late. By the time water reaches a ceiling it has usually been in the structure for a while, and it has rarely travelled straight down.
This section covers finding the actual entry point, which is the hard part — water runs along rafters and decking before it drops, so the stain is often feet from the hole. It covers the usual culprits in order of likelihood: flashing at chimneys, walls and skylights; plumbing vent boots gone brittle with UV; nail pops; valleys; and ice damming, which pushes water backwards under shingles and is a distinctly Indiana problem after a thaw.
You will find what to do immediately to limit damage, what can wait for dry weather, and how to tell a leak that needs a repair from one that means the roof is finished. There is also guidance on documenting it for insurance, and on the mould and structural questions that follow a leak left too long.
