Severe Weather Aftermath: Dealing with Storm Damage after high winds or tornados!

What to Do After February’s Storms in Bloomington, Indiana

February 2025 has already brought powerful weather across Indiana. Yesterday’s tornado in Bloomington, Indiana (Thursday, February 19th) left visible damage in parts of the community, and today strong wind gusts have reached up to 33 mph across Central Indiana, increasing the risk of roof, siding, and tree damage.

When severe weather hits close to home, it can leave homeowners feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start. Taking the right steps immediately after a storm can make a major difference in protecting your home — and your insurance claim.

Let’s walk through what to do next.

Immediate Steps After the Storm

1. Safety Comes First

Before anything else, ensure your family is safe.

  • Stay clear of downed power lines.

  • Watch for fallen trees and unstable structures.

  • If you suspect structural damage, avoid entering unsafe areas.

Even high wind events — like today’s 33 mph gusts — can loosen shingles, tear flashing, or cause debris impact damage that isn’t immediately obvious.

2. Document the Damage

Take clear photos and videos of:

  • Missing or lifted shingles

  • Dented gutters or siding

  • Fallen branches on the roof

  • Water stains on ceilings or walls

This documentation is extremely important for your insurance claim and helps establish storm-related damage.

3. Prevent Further Damage

If it is safe to do so:

  • Cover broken windows with plywood

  • Tarp exposed roof areas

  • Remove loose debris

Taking temporary protective steps can prevent additional water intrusion and show your insurance company you acted responsibly.

Working With Your Insurance Company

Report the Damage Quickly

Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible. Provide your photos, videos, and a detailed description of what happened.

Meet With the Adjuster

An insurance adjuster will inspect the damage and determine coverage. Having a professional roofing contractor present during this inspection can help ensure nothing is overlooked.

Understand Your Policy

Know your deductible and what your policy covers. Wind and tornado damage are typically covered, but coverage details vary.

Choosing the Right Repair Contractor

Storm events often bring an influx of out-of-town contractors. Protect yourself by:

Doing Your Research

  • Look for established local companies

  • Check reviews and references

  • Verify insurance and licensing

Getting Multiple Estimates

This helps you understand the scope of work and ensures fair pricing.

Looking for Experience With Storm Claims

A contractor familiar with insurance processes can help streamline your claim and avoid delays.

Repair vs. Replacement: What’s the Right Call?

After strong winds or tornado activity, damage isn’t always obvious from the ground. What looks minor may compromise the integrity of your roof.

In some cases:

  • Spot repairs are sufficient

  • In others, full roof replacement is more cost-effective long-term

A professional inspection will help determine the best course of action.

Final Thoughts: Recovering After February’s Severe Weather

The recent tornado in Bloomington and today’s strong wind gusts are reminders that storm season can arrive early in Indiana. Acting quickly, documenting damage, and working with trusted professionals can help restore your home safely and efficiently.

Storm recovery isn’t just about fixing shingles — it’s about protecting your family and your investment.

New roof installed with ATR roofing. Mark Oliva was great to work with and he worked with insurance to get damage identified and covered. They used owens corning shingles. For an extra fee I went with the "duration" shingles for longer lasting shingles. Whole job was completed very quickly and workers cleaned up nicely. They also repaired some water damaged soffit in the process. Still working with suggestions and estimates for improved gutter guards.

ATR was very easy to work with. They replaced my roof and gutters, and added ridge vents to the roof. Took care of getting all the pictures and paperwork to insurance company. Great job on clean up, day of job! I have already recommended to a friend, who just had some roof damage.

Carlos from atr did an excellent job. He helped get the insurance to agree I had hail damage and they paid for most of the cost. They also replaced a soffit piece that had a hole in it from a squirrel and replaced 3 pieces of plywood that was rotten without xtra cost along with flashing around our light. I would recommend them anytime.

ATR inspected our roof, confirmed it was in good condition, but patched a few holes with caulking. Free of charge. Appreciate the honesty

Did my roof, workers left their beer cans for me to throw away, urinated behind my bushes, and hide their lunch trash in my evergreen tree, and was hit in head by roll of nails left on roof when they blew off in a high wind. Think twice before using this roofing company.
