Skylights and Severe Roof Damage: The Hidden Risks of Improper Installation

Sep 17, 2024 | Skylight Installation, Skylight Repair

Severe roof damage caused by improperly installed skylights leading to leaks and structural issues.

Skylights, often touted for their aesthetic appeal and ability to enhance natural lighting, can bring significant benefits to any home or building. However, improperly installed skylights are also notorious for causing severe roof damage that can compromise the structural integrity of your property. From water leaks to mold growth, the consequences of a poorly fitted skylight can be devastating if not addressed promptly. In this article, we’ll explore the causes, signs, and prevention strategies for roof damage caused by improper skylight installation, arming you with the knowledge to safeguard your home.

Understanding the Importance of Proper Skylight Installation

When skylights are installed correctly, they provide beautiful natural lighting and can even help with ventilation. However, the installation process is intricate and requires professional expertise. The skylight must be aligned with the roof’s slope, fitted with the correct flashing materials, and sealed against the elements. Any deviation from these precise requirements can result in leaks, drafts, and, eventually, severe roof damage.

Unfortunately, many homeowners are unaware of the risks associated with poor skylight installation. It’s not just about aesthetics—improper installation can lead to structural problems that could have been avoided with a careful, professional approach.

The Connection Between Skylights and Roof Leaks

Improperly installed skylights are one of the primary causes of roof leaks. A skylight that isn’t sealed correctly allows water to seep through the gaps, causing significant moisture issues. Over time, this moisture can compromise the integrity of the roof’s materials, leading to rotting wood, weakened insulation, and even mold growth. What starts as a small, unnoticed leak can evolve into a much larger problem requiring costly roof repairs or replacements.

In addition to water damage, poorly sealed skylights also let in drafts, which can affect the energy efficiency of your home. You may notice your heating and cooling systems working harder, increasing your energy bills.

Common Causes of Improper Skylight Installation

There are several factors that contribute to the improper installation of skylights, many of which are avoidable with proper care and expertise. Below are some of the most common causes:

  • Poor quality materials: Using substandard flashing or sealants can result in leaks.
  • Incorrect slope alignment: If the skylight is installed on a roof with the wrong slope, water may not drain properly.
  • Inadequate sealing: Without proper sealing, water, air, and debris can penetrate the roof.
  • Lack of experience: DIY attempts or inexperienced contractors may overlook crucial steps in the installation process.
  • Improper sizing: A skylight that is too large or too small for the roof opening can create gaps, leading to moisture intrusion.

All these factors combine to create an environment ripe for severe roof damage, particularly during heavy rain, snow, or wind storms.

Signs of Severe Roof Damage Caused by Skylights

Not all roof damage is immediately visible, but there are some telltale signs that a skylight is causing issues. If you notice any of the following, you may need to inspect the skylight and surrounding roof area:

  • Visible leaks around the skylight: Water pooling or dripping from the skylight, especially after a storm, is a clear indicator.
  • Water stains on the ceiling: Discoloration or stains on the ceiling near a skylight suggest moisture is penetrating the roof.
  • Peeling paint or wallpaper: Excess moisture can cause walls and ceilings to warp, leading to peeling or bubbling.
  • Drafts or temperature fluctuations: If the skylight isn’t sealed correctly, you might feel drafts or notice inconsistent room temperatures.
  • Mold growth: Damp conditions around the skylight can encourage mold growth, which can be harmful to both your home and your health.
  • Sagging roof structure: In extreme cases, ongoing leaks can weaken the roof structure, leading to sagging or bowing.

If any of these signs are present, it’s important to address the problem immediately to prevent further damage.

Long-Term Impacts of Ignoring Skylight-Related Roof Damage

Ignoring the early signs of roof damage from an improperly installed skylight can lead to a host of more serious—and expensive—issues. Over time, persistent leaks can:

  • Weaken the roof deck: Water infiltration can cause wood to rot, weakening the structural support of your roof.
  • Damage insulation: Waterlogged insulation becomes less effective, compromising your home’s energy efficiency.
  • Cause interior damage: Water that seeps through the roof can damage ceilings, walls, and flooring, leading to expensive interior repairs.
  • Encourage pest infestations: Moisture attracts pests, such as termites and carpenter ants, which can further damage your roof and home structure.
  • Increase health risks: Mold and mildew growth caused by excess moisture can lead to respiratory problems for you and your family.

What starts as a seemingly minor skylight issue can escalate into a significant repair project if left unchecked. It’s crucial to deal with these problems as soon as they arise.

Preventing Roof Damage from Skylights

Fortunately, severe roof damage caused by improperly installed skylights can be avoided with some preventative measures. Here are some tips to keep your roof and skylight in optimal condition:

  • Hire professional installers: Avoid DIY skylight installations and hire a reputable contractor with experience in skylight installation.
  • Use high-quality materials: Ensure the skylight and flashing materials are of high quality and designed to withstand your local climate.
  • Ensure proper alignment: Skylights must be installed with the correct slope to allow for proper water drainage.
  • Inspect seals regularly: Periodically check the skylight seals to ensure there are no cracks or gaps where water can penetrate.
  • Schedule annual roof inspections: Have your roof, including any skylights, inspected by a professional once a year to catch potential issues early.

By taking these proactive steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of roof damage related to your skylight.

Steps to Repair Roof Damage from Skylights

If you’ve discovered that your skylight is causing roof damage, it’s important to take immediate action to prevent further harm. Here’s a guide to addressing the problem:

  1. Assess the damage: Carefully inspect both the interior and exterior areas around the skylight. Look for visible leaks, water stains, or structural damage.
  2. Remove the skylight: If the damage is extensive, the skylight may need to be removed to properly assess the damage and fix the underlying issues.
  3. Repair or replace roofing materials: Damaged shingles, flashing, or roof decking will need to be repaired or replaced before reinstalling the skylight.
  4. Install a new skylight (if necessary): If the original skylight was poorly installed or damaged, it might be best to replace it with a new unit that fits properly.
  5. Seal and protect: Ensure that all seals, flashing, and materials are correctly installed and tested to prevent future leaks.

In some cases, minor damage can be repaired by simply resealing the skylight, but more severe issues may require a full roof and skylight replacement.

The Wrap-Up: Severe Roof Damage Caused by Improperly Installed Skylights

Improperly installed skylights are a major source of severe roof damage. When installation is rushed or done without proper expertise, the consequences can be costly. Not only can leaks damage the roof structure, but unchecked moisture can lead to interior problems like mold and warped drywall.

For homeowners, it’s essential to ensure that skylights are installed professionally and inspected regularly to avoid long-term issues. By taking a proactive approach, you can enjoy the beauty and functionality of a skylight without worrying about the potential downsides.

New roof installed with ATR roofing. Mark Oliva was great to work with and he worked with insurance to get damage identified and covered. They used owens corning shingles. For an extra fee I went with the "duration" shingles for longer lasting shingles. Whole job was completed very quickly and workers cleaned up nicely. They also repaired some water damaged soffit in the process. Still working with suggestions and estimates for improved gutter guards.

Carlos from atr did an excellent job. He helped get the insurance to agree I had hail damage and they paid for most of the cost. They also replaced a soffit piece that had a hole in it from a squirrel and replaced 3 pieces of plywood that was rotten without xtra cost along with flashing around our light. I would recommend them anytime.

Did my roof, workers left their beer cans for me to throw away, urinated behind my bushes, and hide their lunch trash in my evergreen tree, and was hit in head by roll of nails left on roof when they blew off in a high wind. Think twice before using this roofing company.
